What is a SAIL Address & Why it is Important?

What is a SAIL address & why it is important?

A SAIL address, or single alternative inspection location address, provides you with an address at which you can keep your limited company's or a limited liability partnership records and registers if you do not wish to keep them at your registered office address. Under the Companies Act 2006, you may be obliged to retain up to 13 possible registers, depending on the nature of your private company.

Under the Companies Regulations 2008, you can keep the following statutory records at a SAIL address:

  • Register of members
  • Register of directors
  • Contracts and documents relating to shares
  • Directors' service contracts
  • Register of secretaries
  • Records of resolutions
  • Register of debenture holders
  • Directors' indemnities
  • Register of charges

You are free to appoint one SAIL address for your company at any one time. However, your chosen SAIL address must be in the same part of the United Kingdom as your registered office address. For example, if you registered your company in Northern Ireland, you must have a single alternative inspection location address in North of Ireland.

Once you have chosen a SAIL address, you must keep all the statutory registers of a single type together at either the single alternative inspection location address or your registered office address.
